What to be aware of with Prostate Health

May 29th, 2010 by infogeek

As men pass middle age they start to experience health problems that if left untreated can lead to serious complications including death. Leaving the initial symptoms untreated can make the problem much worse. Most men tend to delay seeing a doctor until it is too late for effective treatment of their condition.

One of the most common problems, and the first indication of future problems is the need to make more frequent trips to the bathroom-especially in the middle of the night. Straining or pushing during urination can make the situation worse. Urination can cause pain or a burning feeling for some men.

While the majority of men over age 60 experience these symptoms, most are not aware of what causes them. These symptoms are typically a result of an enlarged prostate which is one of the most common issues affecting older men. In fact, 60 percent of men over the age of 60 and up to 80 percent of men over the age of 80 have an enlarged prostate.

An enlarged prostate, or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), is not the end of the world. It is not a type of prostate cancer, nor does it cause prostate cancer. However, as many men know, it can cause significant discomfort, inconvenience and awkwardness. BPH symptoms can vary depending on the severity of the condition. The most common symptoms include:

  •  Waking up at night to urinate
  •  A Frequent need to urinate (sometimes every two hours or less)
  •  Pain or burning sensation during urination
  •  Frequent, sudden or uncontrollable urge to urinate
  •  Pushing or straining to start urination
  •  Feeling like the bladder does not empty completely during urination
  •  Dribbling following urination

As a man gets older, the chance of developing BPH increases. This is due to growth patterns associated with the prostate. After a male reaches the age of 40, a second round of prostate growth often occurs as a natural part of the aging process.

The prostate is a gland which is located just below the bladder. The main function of the prostate is to produce fluid for semen. Most of the time men don’t even realize they have a problem. As it expands, it can squeeze and place pressure on the urethra, like a clamp on a garden hose, thus constricting urinary flow. As pressure builds and the “clamp” tightens, the result can be some of the commonly perceived BPH symptoms.

Although there is no known cure for BPH, there are medications and procedures available to reduce the symptoms. These can include a wide range of prescription medications as well as surgical procedures that can quickly bring relief.
