Jack White, Avicii and Justice are also slated to make mainstage appearances at Lolla, set for August 3-5 in Chicago.

Over the course of 20 years, Lollapalooza has developed a reputation as perhaps the most multi-hued of festivals, thanks in no small part to Perry Farrell’s booking of acts that ranged from Ice Cube to Pearl Jam — and just about everyone in between — and his own, uh, uniquely psychedelic outlook on things.

But for this year, he’s going to a rather basic color scheme: namely red, black and white.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jack White, Black Sabbath and the Black Keys top the bill for Lollapalooza 2012, set for August 3-5 in Chicago’s Grant Park. Joining them are a list of top-notch electronic artists (always a passion of Perry’s), including Avicii, Justice, Calvin Harris and Bassnectar.

Lolla 2012 marks the only North American fest appearance for the reunited Sabbath, and it’ll also be the first time in six years that the Chili Peppers (who broke through at Lolla ’92) appear at the fest. White will make his first solo appearance, and the Keys? Well, after years of mid-card service, they finally make the leap to headliner status this year.

Florence and the Machine, At the Drive-In, the Shins, Fun., Passion Pit, the Weeknd, Franz Ferdinand, Bloc Party and Sigur Rós are also on the bill — plus acts from Brazil and Chile (in recognition of Lolla’s expansion to South America) and a full slate of up-and-coming electro acts on Perry’s Stage. Want even more? How about J.Cole, Wale, Die Antwoord, the Walkmen, the Gaslight Anthem and Alabama Shakes?

All in all, Lolla 2012 features more than 130 bands. Three-day passes for the fest are now on sale, and a limited number of single-day tickets will go on sale later this summer. For ticketing information — and to see the full Lollapalooza lineup — check out the fest’s official site.

James Cameron Settles The Score On ‘Titanic’ Casting Rumors

Rumors have been circulating that Matthew McConaughey and Gwyneth Paltrow had been offered the roles of Jack and Rose.

The success of “Titanic” is undeniable. With a worldwide gross of $1.8 billion, the film is the second highest grossing movie in box office history — just behind director James Cameron‘s other massive project, “Avatar.” The historical film was nominated for fourteen Academy Awards and won eleven, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Cinematography and Best Original Song.

It also launched the careers of two of Hollywood’s most well-known actors, Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet.

The 3-D re-release (which raked in an additional $17.3 million during its debut last weekend) brought rumors to the surface that other popular actors had turned down the role.

When MTV News’ Josh Horowitz sat down with Cameron, Horowitz asked about the rumored “Titanic” casting circulating the Internet. Supposedly, Matthew McConaughey was in talks for Jack Dawson and Gwyneth Paltrow for Rose DeWitt Bukater. “I will neither confirm nor deny,” Cameron said. “I just don’t think that’s cool to talk about actors that either chose not to do it, or were unavailable, or stupidly decided that there wasn’t enough meat on the bone of the character, or whatever it was.”

We bet those actors came calling back begging for another chance. “They should,” the award-winning director said. “They should’ve come whimpering back afterwards and said, ‘I will never second guess you again as long as I live.’ But it’s too late. You got one chance, that’s it. And you might want to think about this next time when you get called.” And even though the role of Rose follows Winslet everywhere, there’s no doubt it was the experience of a lifetime. She recently told us that she’s glad the film can reach a whole new audience, including her children who will see it for the first time.

But apparently, some audiences didn’t know the movie is based on a true story. After seeing the film in 3-D, people have taken to Twitter to admit they didn’t realize the tragic incident actually occurred. “That’s shocking to me,” Cameron commented on the news, “that somebody could actually tweet — because it requires some neuromotor capability — and not know that Titanic was a real event, but apparently there are [those] people.”

“It’s a sad comment on our society. However, it does put the onus on us to get the history right. Because it might be the only record a thousand years from now,” the director laughed, “the one disc might be the only record.”

What would you think of “Titanic” starring Matthew McConaughey and Gwyneth Paltrow? Leave your comment below!

‘Joe had a lot of fun working with Bruce on the action scenes,’ Rian Johnson tells MTV News of Joseph Gordon-Levitt playing a young Bruce Willis.
By Kara Warner

Thanks to the highly anticipated debut of the “Looper” teaser trailer Thursday, there is almost two minutes of brand-new, action-packed footage to overanalyze and dissect. We’ve already highlighted five key scenes to watch out for in the teaser, and now, MTV News is proud to bring you exclusive expert commentary from the film’s writer/director, Rian Johnson.

Johnson was visibly excited for fans to see the teaser, particularly the first glimpses of the gritty future reality of the film’s setting and star Joseph Gordon-Levitt in action as a young Bruce Willis.

“The beginning here is just setting up the premise,” Johnson explained. “We take some time to get you into the world. You can kind of tell from the look of it that the world is a very grounded science-fiction world; it’s not a big CG world. We did lots of practical stuff and tried to keep it feeling very real and near-future.”

With regard to Gordon-Levitt’s makeup to look like Willis, Johnson said, although he looks impressive in the teaser, he can’t wait for fans to see the “Dark Knight Rises” actor’s physical performance in the finished film.

“I really can’t wait for people to actually see Joe’s performance in the movie with the makeup, because if you see a picture of him … obviously it’s not like he looks exactly like Bruce Willis, but once his performance plays out in the context of the film, it really works.”

Johnson also hinted that, despite the blink-and-you-miss-it appearance of co-star Emily Blunt, there is more to her role than you think.

“You see a quick clip of Emily Blunt, [but] there’s a whole sequence where she had to do some action work and she just kinda kicked ass. I’m excited for people to see it,” Johnson said. “Emily really held her own when it was time to get out the shotgun and do some blasting.”

The “Brick” director went on to say that he just had a plain old good time making the film, particularly the action sequences, for which veteran star Willis proved to be a very key component.

“It was fun for me. You see flashes of a lot of action in the movie, and this is the first time I’ve been able to do it on that scale, which is really fun, especially working with a veteran like Bruce,” Johnson said. “Joe had a lot of fun working with Bruce on the action scenes. Bruce kind of showed us the ropes. It was pretty awesome.”

With Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie engaged, most of the free world is sending its best wishes to the long-time couple. Including… Jennifer Aniston?!?

Yes, according to a Hollywood Life source, the former Mrs. Pitt is beyond content with boyfriend Justin Theroux and is simply “happy for Brad and Angelina” at this point.

“She is so in love with Justin, that she is really grateful how things turned out,” the Aniston insider says. “In a strange way if it weren’t for Angelina, Jennifer would not have connected with Justin in a romantic way. Jennifer is in a really wonderful place right now. I wouldn’t be surprised if she even went to their wedding.”

Plus, hey, Jen is clearly pregnant and the happiest she’s ever been anyway, so why possess hard feelings.

But are you buying this? Do you think Jennifer Aniston is really happy for Brangelina?

‘Looper’ Trailer: Five Key Scenes

April 16th, 2012 by factor
Respond

Joseph Gordon-Levitt stares down his older self (Bruce Willis) in sneak peek of the time-traveling thriller.
By Kara Warner

We’ve been dying to see the “Looper” trailer for the past few days, and now it’s finally here, in all its time-traveling, gun-fighting, trained assassin-vs.-himself glory.

Here are five key scenes from the sneak peek:

Loopers Explained
Thanks to the expository voice-over from star Joseph Gordon-Levitt, we learn that Loopers are time-traveling assassins hired by Mafioso types to kill other criminals in the past, so they don’t become problems in the future. We see Gordon-Levitt’s character “at work” in several different ways in the teaser — including one in which his assignment turns out to be his older self.

A Realistic Futuristic Setting
At the beginning of the trailer, it appears as if the film is set in present day. The characters’ style of dress, cars and guns are not exactly current, but they look familiar. All that changes when we see Gordon-Levitt’s character flying through a modern-looking city on a not-of-this-world motorcycle. The brief glimpses at advanced technology are paired with quick shots of what Gordon-Levitt’s character experiences when he travels through time, a sort of mind-bending distorted reality that tells us we’re in a not-too-distant future.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Bruce Willis
From the moment it was announced that Gordon-Levitt would be playing a younger version of Bruce Willis, we’ve been very curious to see how that might look onscreen. Thanks to this new teaser, we finally get a glimpse of Gordon-Levitt-as-Willis, via a close-up shot of their bright green eyes and a few hints at their similar body movements — before they start trying to kill each other, that is. Gordon-Levitt admitted that he spent three hours in a makeup chair every morning in order to step into Willis, as it were.

Emily Blunt in Action
Emily Blunt’s appearance in the trailer is almost of the blink-and-you-miss-it variety. We see Blunt wielding a shotgun, possibly in an attempt to off the young version of Gordon-Levitt and in several states of strife. Her scenes are almost a combination of action from the film’s present settings and its flashbacks. Why is she upset? Is she related to Gordon-Levitt and Willis’ character or romantically linked to them? Maybe she is also a Looper? So many questions that need answering!

Gunfights Galore
This movie is very much a science-fiction thriller and yet, contrary to what a lot of people believe to be true about gun battles in sci-fi movies, there are no laser beams or space guns in sight. The weapons we see in the trailer look like new versions of handguns and shotguns that are powered by regular bullets. And because this is a movie about time-traveling hitmen who off their assignments with guns, we see a lot of gunfight action in this spot, along with some hand-to-hand combat, that only adds to the gritty, futuristic-yet-realistic feel.

Black Keys Warm Up Dreary Coachella Festival Friday

Swedish House Mafia brings the beats as first day of three-day desert festival suffers uncharacteristically low temperatures and drizzle.

INDIO, California — On a day that had festivalgoers packing ponchos instead of sunblock and the merchandise booths no doubt sold a record number of hoodies, the uncharacteristic weather at Coachella’s Friday kickoff was no match for the heat of the Black Keys.

The Akron, Ohio, guitar-and-drums blues-rock duo instantly had the crowd in their hands, opening with the “Howlin’ For You” sing-along from their 2010 commercial breakthrough, Brothers.

Announced earlier this week as headliners for Lollapalooza 2012 in August, the Keys also performed Friday night at Coachella in 2011, but this year, they were promoted to top billing.

The pair wailed through the Grammy-winning “Tighten Up” and “Lonely Boy.” During “Everlasting Light,” a giant disco ball descended as frontman Dan Auerbach unleashed his falsetto. Auerbach asked the crowd to wish a happy birthday to drummer Patrick Carney before ending with “I Got Mine.”

Swedish House Mafia closed out the main stage, proving that some EDM has outgrown the Sahara dance tent. The masses were jumping to the beats of Axwell, Steve Angello and Sebastian Ingrosso, who is also playing a solo set in the Sahara on Saturday (April 14). Angello will DJ a solo set in June at Las Vegas’ Electric Daisy Carnival.

“I heard there was a rumor going around that the reason it was gray and muggy earlier is because there were two Sheffield [England] bands on,” Pulp’s Jarvis Cocker quipped, referring to earlier mainstagers the Arctic Monkeys.

In the Gobi tent, Frank Ocean fans swooned over his take on Coldplay’s “Strawberry Swing” and other cuts from his debut mixtape, Nostalgia, Ultra. The crowd excitedly welcomed Tyler, the Creator to the stage early in the set to growl his Odd Future “Analog 2″ verses.

Influential Swedish hardcore band Refused expressed gratitude for their long-awaited reunion, saying, “The reason we’re playing tonight is because Coachella invited us.” Their hour-long performance, which inspired lots of head-banging and moshing, included “Coup D’Etat,” “Worms of the Senses/Faculties of the Skull,” “Tannhauser/Derive” and “New Noise.”

Elsewhere, the Black Angels psychedelic blues — which included a sitar — didn’t draw nearly the crowd it deserved, Madness had the Outdoor stage skanking away and Rancid’s Tim Armstrong backed Jimmy Cliff on guitar.

In response to last year’s event selling out — a week after the 2011 lineup was announced — Coachella is experimenting with featuring the same artists for two consecutive three-day weekends: April 13-15 and April 20-22.

Still to come this weekend: Radiohead, Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg, Bon Iver, Florence and the Machine, A$AP Rocky and the At the Drive-In reunion.

‘Eastbound & Down’: The Best F—ing Show On HBO

April 16th, 2012 by factor
Respond

As Kenny Powers (presumably) rides off into the sunset this Sunday night, we pay homage to HBO’s best-kept secret.
By James Montgomery

Danny McBride in “Eastbound and Down”
Photo: HBO

“Stevie, you weak mother—-er, you listen to me right now. You have made an ass-ton of stupid choices in Myrtle Beach; this is the moment of truth. Now is not the time to lay on the ground like a bald f—ing baby. Now is the time to be a f—ing man.”

That was Kenny Powers on last Sunday’s penultimate episode of “Eastbound & Down,” moments after learning that recently shorn sycophant Stevie Janowski had lost his son (which would lead to Powers subsequently decking him in the face, hence the reason Stevie was laying on the ground like a bald f—ing baby), and I took the time to transcribe it for two reasons: One, because I love the phrase “an ass-ton of stupid choices.” And two, because it was unquestionably the most important scene in the show’s three-season history.

Why? Well, for starters, it kicked off a series of events that included Powers and Janowski setting off to rescue KP’s kidnapped son (while dressed as Rambo and Freddy Krueger, respectively), a near street-fight, a heartwarming détente between two former foes, a racist “Old South” KIA dealer being immolated and, ultimately, Powers’ triumphant return to glory. Secondly, though Powers was giving the speech to Janowski, you got the feeling he was also giving it to himself; after all, he’s made “an ass-ton” of poor decisions too — in Myrtle Beach and pretty much everywhere else — and was actually determined to do something about it for once. Thirdly, the speech represented not just the moment when Powers moved from brutish buffoon to genuine hero, but when the show segued into the third and final act of its story, moving from “confrontation” to “resolution.”

And finally, it’s because the speech marked the exact moment when “Eastbound & Down” became the greatest show on HBO.

Of course, in a typically Kenny Powers-ian move, “Eastbound” waited until midway through its second-to-last episode to make the leap (it all comes to a close this Sunday — at least that’s what its creators have said in the past), but rest assured, it’s finally done it. Long considered the odd program out at HBO — or certainly the least-discussed (except for maybe “How to Make It in America,” though the less said about that show, the better) — thanks to a sweeping third season, it’s no longer just the goofy comedy about the dude with the mullet. It has quietly, almost secretly, become a genuinely excellent show: funny, fabulously acted (seriously, both Danny McBride and Steve Little deserve Emmys for their work this year), fantastically shot and edited and scored, unafraid to veer off into decidedly dark territory. It is brave and bold and basically everything you could ask for from a show that started off as a sort of piss-take on former MLB reliever John Rocker’s epic fall from grace.

It’s less ponderous than “Boardwalk Empire” or “Treme,” doesn’t contain one ounce of the import “Game of Thrones” carries with it, and is certainly funnier than “Life’s Too Short” (even in those aforementioned dark moments). Oh, and it has definitely killed fewer horses than “Luck.”

To be fair, “Eastbound” took a while to find its legs. There were standout moments in the first season — Powers’ pro-level meltdown (“Get me paid, bitch!”); his slo-mo stroll through the halls of his former middle school, the Black Keys’ “Your Touch” blaring in the background; his ecstasy-fueled dance-off, the harrowing and heartbreaking backyard BBQ scene in episode four — though, for the most part, you weren’t sure if you were supposed to laugh or wince. Season two, which picked up after Powers left his former flame at a gas station and hightailed it to Mexico, was largely viewed as a disappointment, though we did meet his deadbeat father (played by none other than Don Johnson), and really, as is the case with all great three-act productions, we couldn’t appreciate all that had happened until we reached the conclusion. Kenny needed to go Down South, it would now seem, because he needed to bottom out.

And now, finally, we’re entering the home stretch. The third season of “Eastbound” has unquestionably been its best, full of shudder-inducing dark comedy (Powers storming into a college classroom to win back the affections of his sorta-girlfriend, a boom-box-aided funeral scene, and a memorable sequence in which he attacks a crowd with bottle rockets while dressed as Uncle Sam) and actually dark moments (Janowski has certainly been through the wringer, to say the very least). Through it all, Powers has only grown as a character, becoming a father to his son Toby, putting the demons of his past to rest, settling scores, and, as of last week, recapturing that old fire. I’m not gonna lie, when he finally uncorked his “You’re f—in’ out!” on Sunday, I actually leapt off the sofa.

It’s a testament to the creative team behind the show — McBride, Jody Hill, Ben Best and David Gordon Green chief among them — that they’ve managed to craft a story line that has ebbed and flowed but, really, always remained on track. With all the ephemera “Eastbound” tosses our way, they’ve managed to keep their grand designs hidden, though on Sunday, it became apparent that this show is, at it’s very heart, nothing more than a classic bildungsroman, a tale of a protagonist’s psychological and moral growth (my good pal Andy Greenwald once referred to it as a “bil-dongs-roman,” which, given the show’s proclivity for dick jokes, is spot-on).

Through three seasons of topless Jet Ski rides, frat-guy-pleasing quotables and more profanity than Al Swearengen on a bender, “Eastbound” has somehow become an actual show, one with heart and soul and a cast of characters that are cartoonish, to be sure, but unquestionably real. They make terrible decisions, they hurt those closest to them, and yet, redemption is ultimately still within their reach. And in that regard, it has succeeded where any and all its HBO brethren have failed. Which is why it’s the best.

With one episode left, I’m not sure how “Eastbound” is going to end. Will Kenny finally put his dreams of a return to MLB glory to bed and become the man (seemingly) everyone knows he should be? Or will he head off into the sunset, ever the gunslinger, looking for one final duel? Either way, it’s been a heck of a ride — not to mention an improbable rise, both for Kenny Powers and the show itself. It’ll always be an underdog — no one’s ever going to put it in the same class as “The Wire” or “The Sopranos” or even “Curb Your Enthusiasm” — but maybe it deserves to be in the discussion.

And to think: It all started with a man with a mind for victory and an arm like a f—ing cannon. How it ends, and how it will be remembered, is anybody’s guess.

How do you think “Eastbound & Down” will end? Share your predictions in the comments!

James Cameron Denies Shooting ‘Avatar 2′ Footage During Dive

‘If they think of you first as a filmmaker, then all of the exploration stuff must be so that you can be a better filmmaker,’ he tells MTV News.

When James Cameron returned from his record-breaking deep-sea dive to the Mariana Trench, many people assumed the expedition must have been for a movie, most likely “Avatar 2,” which is said to involve the oceans of Pandora.

But Cameron, when he spoke with MTV News, insisted that is simply not the case. “Completely spurious rumor. People try to connect the dots, right? If they think of you first as a filmmaker, then all of the exploration stuff must be so that you can be a better filmmaker. Wrong conclusion,” he said. “That’s like [saying] ‘A frog with no legs is deaf.’ ”

The director said the two aspects of his life are connected, but not in a way the rumors suspected. “The correct conclusion is I do the movies to pay for the expeditions, so every once in a while, I have to come back to make a movie,” Cameron said. “It’s pretty much that simple.”

Even with films planned for the immediate future, Cameron doesn’t seem that worried about his explorations getting in the way. “I think the studio execs that want another ‘Avatar’ film are probably more concerned than I am,” he said.

Cameron’s trips to the bottom of the ocean are admittedly dangerous, and he spoke openly about the potential risks involved with that kind of exploration. “I would say watch out for implosion. When a pressure vessel implodes at that kind of pressure, it does so at supersonic speed,” he said. “There are things worse, though, like coming up outside of the search area, because you’re bolted into the sub. You’re going down pretty far. It’s possible to come partway up, get moved 25 miles in a current before you come all the way up. That would be bad.”

According to Cameron, that kind of morbid thinking is what prevents actual tragedies from occurring. “You could freeze to death at the bottom, you could have a fire inside the sphere and asphyxiate — all kinds of bad stuff. The reason you get morbid is by going through all the scenarios ahead of time, you’re doing the engineering to prevent them and you create all the procedures to prevent them,” Cameron said. “It’s basically what NASA does. You list every single thing that could go wrong, and then you do everything you can to have that not happen.”

As for where Cameron hopes to explore next, he said the ocean will keep him busy for the foreseeable future. “We have a vehicle now that can go, by definition, to anywhere in any ocean in the world. If it can go to the deepest place in the Challenger Deep, 65,000 feet down, it can go anywhere else,” he said. “There’s so much yet to be explored. That’s an unknown continent on our planet. Think about Google. You can basically call up a satellite photograph of some hill in the Congo in seconds, but you can’t do that underwater. I could be exploring down there for the next whatever.”

‘Avengers’ Cast: Who Got Roughed Up The Most?

At the film’s red-carpet premiere, the stars pick which superheroes took the hardest beating.

If you’ve been following the comings and goings surrounding “Marvel’s The Avengers,” one of this year’s most highly-anticipated films, you’ve probably noticed in watching the action-packed trailers that everyone onscreen either initiates or suffers from a few decent beatings.

It’s not surprising, considering the film revolves around a group of superheroes fighting a supervillain and an unidentified alien race, but when MTV News hit up the star-studded premiere in Hollywood Wednesday (April 11), we were curious to find out who suffered the most onscreen violence.

“Probably me!” lamented Chris Evans, a.k.a. Captain America. “Probably me. I don’t know, I think we all play our roles,” he added with a mischievous wiggle of his eyebrows.

“We all took a pretty big beating,” admitted Scarlett Johansson, who plays the very adept assassin Black Widow. “I would have to say either [Black] Widow or Hawkeye (played by Jeremy Renner). We’re on the ground so we’re fighting hand-to-hand and it hurts.”

“I think it’s me, actually,” said Chris Hemsworth, whose demigod Thor sees plenty of action in the film. “When I saw the trailer I thought, ‘I get knocked around the whole time!’ ”

Clark Gregg, however, insisted the film’s bad guys get the worst of it, saying it’s the aliens who suffer the most physical abuse. “[And] anybody who crosses the Hulk basically,” he added.

Speaking of the villains, Tom Hiddleston, who plays Loki, the evil god of mischief, made a case for his own suffering.

“Me,” he said with certainty. “Someone’s got to do it.”

‘Girls’: The Reviews Are In!

April 15th, 2012 by factor
Respond

Critics praise HBO show while questioning whether it will connect beyond urban audiences.
By John Mitchell

Lena Dunham in “Girls”
Photo: HBO

HBO’s new comedy “Girls” is easily the most buzzed-about series debut so far this year. From the almost uncomfortably realistic sex scenes and sharp dialogue to series creator/producer/writer/star Lena Dunham’s Louis C.K.-style multitasking — not to mention the show’s similarities to and differences from that other landmark show about four single females in New York — people cannot stop talking about “Girls.” Luckily for everyone involved, most of the things being said range from good to rave.

“Girls,” which premieres Sunday at 9 p.m. on HBO, has critics using words like “groundbreaking” and “revolutionary” to describe the series, about four friends (Dunham and co-stars Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke and Zosia Mamet) in their early 20s trying to get their lives off the ground in NYC.

Here in the MTV Newsroom, we’re as enraptured with the show as everyone else seems to be, but in her otherwise rave review in Salon, Willa Paskin makes an observation about “Girls” that has come up often during chatter about the new series: that its specificity, minus the fantasy element that made middle America fall in love with “Sex and the City,” may make the show unrelatable to those outside East Coast urban centers.

“My concern was that ‘Girls’ speaks so specifically and accurately to the experience of me and my census buddies — and to be clear, that’s urban white girls with safety nets; have at us in the comments — that people would either write it off as navel-gazing, snark at the innate privilege undergirding the whole thing, or find it unrelatable,” Paskin writes.

That concern doesn’t diminish the show’s quality, though, and the site goes on to call the show “smart, bracing, funny, accurately absurd, confessional yet self-aware.”

“Few series come out of the box as brilliant as ‘Girls’ does,” Tim Goodman rhapsodizes in The Hollywood Reporter. “The new HBO series from Lena Dunham (‘Tiny Furniture’) is one of the most original, spot-on, no-missed-steps series in recent memory. For her part, Dunham, who writes, directs, stars in, created and executive produces the series, is a talent as unique and refreshing to the medium as Louis C.K. — high praise indeed, as FX’s ‘Louie’ is one of the most critically acclaimed series on television.”

Sex factors heavily in “Girls,” but unlike the glamorized romps we saw on its HBO foremother “SATC,” the sex acts depicted here are graphic, button-pushing and realistic but not gratuitous. According to Verne Gay in Newsday, the sex serves as a visual manifestation of the characters’ internal issues. In a four-star review, Gay writes, “Hannah [Dunham's character] and the show are all about internal conflict and so is the humor, while sex — and fair warning, it’s pretty graphic here, which may be the handiwork of Apatow — is the metaphor for all that conflict. It’s grotesque, malignant, unpleasurable and a particularly devious torture chamber, at least for the women, who still submit to it.”

The Los Angeles Times isn’t as unconditional in its praise, calling the show “nothing short of revolutionary” but “hard to love.” “There is a cool cleverness to the show that is both attractive and off-putting,” Mary McNamara writes. “The characters are flawed and hyper-aware of their flaws, the stories so bent on covering every angle of self-examination that there is no real role for the viewer to play. Which makes watching it an intellectual rather than emotional experience.”

The show positions itself as being a far more realistic version of the girls in the big city trope that “SATC” glamorized, which the Atlantic Wire‘s Richard Lawson sees as a reflection of the times the two shows premiered in. ” ‘SATC’ was fantasy and fable, with a few bits of relatable relationship stuff thrown to the commoners like chum. ‘Girls’ is something else; it’s a very particular, very of the moment dissection of mundanely funny minutiae, of boredom and anxiety in these brownly grim times,” Lawson writes. “Though I guess it’s possible the difference really is merely generational — the rich late ’90s gave us Sex, while the wobbly ’10s give us Girls, a witty and occasionally touching glimpse into our immediate neighbors’ lives. They’ve got something here, it just remains to be seen how big a thing it is.”

That “Girls” could be the next big things seems like the consensus opinion of critics, but will this story of a group of friends struggling to discover themselves and succeed in the big city connect with audiences in Peoria, Illinois? Lawson seems to think it may. “Who knows, it could be that soon enough young women the nation over will be saying they’re ‘such a Hannah’ or ‘totally a Marnie,’ ” he writes. “Maybe fabulous is officially out. Maybe the new aspiration in these punishing times is, simply, to aspire.”

Are you excited for the series premiere of “Girls” Sunday on HBO? Let us know if you’ll be watching in the comments below!

Writer/director Joss Whedon talks to MTV News about the challenges of putting Captain America and Thor in the same brawl.
By Kara Warner

Despite the seemingly endless Internet speculation about the plot of “Marvel’s The Avengers,” if there’s one thing that we can absolutely count on seeing in the film when it opens is superhero-on-superhero fights.

We’ve seen brief teases of these expectedly awesome and epic battles in the trailers, several of which occur in the blink of an eye and with heavy assists from CGI, and no matter how beautiful they appear onscreen, we can’t help but wonder how the filmmakers developed those complicated scenes without occasionally confusing which superhero has which superpower.

When MTV News caught up with the film’s master choreographer himself, writer/director Joss Whedon, we asked him how he managed to keep all the super suits, super soldiers, demigods and archers separate when choreographing between such diverse characters.

“The big challenge was a) not to let it be generic, for it to be something we haven’t seen before, but mostly to remember everybody’s skill set,” Whedon said at the film’s red-carpet premiere on Wednesday. “The fight choreographer might come up with something where Hawkeye, Captain America and Thor are all doing the same thing and it’s like, ‘Well no, they all have very different levels of power,’ and to sort of honor that reality for each one of them.”

We followed up that question with another heavy-hitter: Now that Whedon has tamed the beast that is this massive undertaking — which includes a pressure cooker of elements including a big budget, huge cast and satisfying fanboy expectations — how much vacation time will he need until he can think about another “Avengers” movie?

“17 years in a tiny cave,” Whedon said. “In Tibet.”

Perhaps we might be waiting awhile for that “Avengers” sequel.

Madonna’s Truth Or Dare Fragrance ’15 Or 16 Years’ In The Making

Queen of Pop tells MTV News that scent is for those ‘daring enough to tell the truth.’

Have you ever wanted to smell like royalty? Well, now’s your chance.

We may not have kings and queens here in democratic America, but we’ve made our celebrities — pop stars in particular — our own sort of royalty, and none is more regal than Queen of Pop Madonna.

On the heels of her acclaimed album MDNA and with a massive, largely sold-out world tour looming, Her Madgesty launched her first-ever fragrance, Truth or Dare, Thursday night in New York, and she tells MTV News that the fresh, gardenia-based scent has been a long time coming.

“This is finally the time that I developed a fragrance that I liked the smell of,” Madonna said when asked why she was entering the celebrity scent game now. “I’ve been trying to develop a fragrance for the last 15 or 16 years.”

“Madonna’s Manager Confirms That ‘Turn Up The Radio’ Will Be Next MDNA Single”

So who is the scent perfect for? Madonna has a few thoughts.

“Someone who is daring, daring enough to tell the truth,” she said before adding, “and someone who likes gardenias.”

Some Madonna watchers have found it curious that the always forward-thinking pop diva would draw on something so well known from her past — her historic Blond Ambition Tour documentary “Madonna: Truth or Dare,” which recently dropped on BluRay — for the name of her new fragrance. M explained that there’s a very simple reason for the name choice.

“My manager [Guy Oseary], he just held a gun to my head and said, ‘Call it this or you’re not going to have a manager anymore,’ and I said OK,” Madonna deadpanned.

After clarifying that she was joking (we figured as much: No one tells Madonna what to do!), the singer elaborated that “truth or dare” is “a phrase that is related to me and my work and what I stand for. I think I’ve had a fairly daring career and I’m pretty honest about my work, so I think that goes with my perfume.”

‘Eastbound & Down’: The Best F—ing Show On HBO

April 14th, 2012 by factor

Jessica Sanchez’s Almost Elimination: Other ‘American Idol’ Shockers

Jennifer Hudson and Chris Daughtry were booted from ‘Idol’ earlier than anyone expected.
By Gil Kaufman

America, you only have yourself to blame. In a pattern repeated for the past few seasons, “American Idol” viewers seem to get a little lazy this time of year and suddenly forget to vote for their favorites, putting one of the potential winners in jeopardy.

Case in point: preternaturally talented teen diva Jessica Sanchez. Even after killing it on Wednesday night (again)
, Bebe Chez very nearly got sent home in seventh place Thursday night in one of the most shocking near-eliminations in recent history.

The judges didn’t even have to hear her sing before they jumped up to save the singer
, but she came thisclose to becoming the latest super-talent to wash out of “Idol” way before her time.

The “Idol” save has a checkered history. Sometimes it’s been pulled out for singers whose talents (and commercial prospects) were decent at best (Michael Lynche) or annoying at worst (Casey Abrams). In fact, of the four saves in “Idol” history, the only one that truly made sense was season eight’s piano-playing Matt Giraud, who only made it one more week before being sent home.

With only two weeks left before their save would have timed out, Randy, Jennifer and Steven pulled out the lifeline for the one remaining contestant who truly deserves it, if only for the fact that Sanchez could break the string of wins by bland white male singers who’ve met with solid to dismal chart success over the past four seasons. If Sanchez had gotten the boot, she would have joined a fairly illustrious group of singers who were gone too soon. Among them:

Jennifer Hudson: Success is the best revenge, and when Hudson was inexplicably sent home in seventh place during season three who knew she’d go on to be the first Oscar winner in “Idol” history and a musical powerhouse? Um, we did.

Chris Daughtry: The second-most shocking elimination in “Idol” history has to be bald-headed steak-and-potatoes rocker Chris Daughtry. He went out in fourth place in season five, which was won by … Taylor Hicks. Yeah, that guy. After declining to take the lead singer gig in Fuel, Daughtry went on to multiplatinum success and a spot as the third best-selling “Idol” alum of all time.

Melinda Doolittle: If you watched season six of “Idol” then you likely remember the powerhouse vocalist that ex-lead judge Simon Cowell dubbed “incredible.” But, somehow, Melinda got the hook in the week before the finale, beat out by Blake Lewis. You know, the beatboxing faux-hawk wearing dude who lost to Jordin Sparks? Exactly.

Do you think the judges made the right call by saving Jessica? Let us know in comments below!

Talk Nerdy asks, ‘Will the superhero all-star flick live up to the hype?’ Fans who got an early peek seem to think so
By Eric Ditzian

“The Avengers,” apparently, rules.

After a string of Los Angeles screenings, nerdy tastemakers have been squealing all over Twitter about what director Joss Whedon has delivered for this loooooong-in-development superhero all-star flick. “Like, double plus awesome,” declared Seth Green. “Lost” guru Damon Lindelof came up with a Twitter hashtag that’s a little too colorful to reprint here without a tweaking: .

To Lindelof, I say right back: F—yeah! Because, honestly, what a relief! For a while now on “Talk Nerdy,” Brian Phares and I have been expressing worries like:

» There are too many heroes! With Iron Man fighting for screen time with Captain America, with Thor potentially chaffing against Loki as much in a brother-vs.-brother brouhaha as in matters of plot-point development, “Avengers” is simply going to be overstuffed. No character or storyline will be given room to breathe.

» Is the Hulk going to look hokey? Can the CGI beast hold his own next to his flesh-and-blood compatriots and not come off looking like a cartoon?

» Are 2011′s good-but-not-great Marvel installments (“Captain America” and “Thor”) a sign of good-but-not-great things to come?

And so on. Now, though, our cautious, please-Joss-don’t-hurt-us approach to the film appears to be unfounded. “Avengers” hasn’t yet screened in New York, so we can’t throw our own nerdy support behind the film, but the future is looking superheroically bright.

Moviegoers are taking notice too. Early box-office tracking suggests the movie will open north of $125 million over the first weekend in May. That’d be double what both “Thor” and “Captain America” reeled in last year. The question is whether “Avengers” can top the $128 million opening weekend of “Iron Man 2″ in 2010. If Tony Stark can collect all that cheddar on his own, one would expect a film assembling so many Marvel heroes and villains on one screen would eclipse that mark. Based on the early geek buzz, it does seem like “Avengers” can pull it off. And it’s the buzz that Whedon is counting on.

“We really put the characters through it,” he told MTV News recently, “and we want the audience to be with them every step of the way and come out of it going, ‘That was an extraordinary experience, and now I want to pay to see it again.’ ”

Are you planning on seeing “The Avengers”? Leave your comment below!

Music single “Mercy,” West popped up at 2 Chainz’s SXSW set, and this week he made a silent appearance alongside the Atlanta rapper on BET’s “106 and Park.”

“That’s my dog and he doesn’t do press — he didn’t wanna do it period — and they kind of forced his hand,” 2 Chainz told MTV News of West’s “106 and Park” appearance, from the set of MTV’s “Hip Hop Squares. “I was like, ‘You don’t have to say nothing, bro,’ because at the end of the day I knew he was up there supporting me, period.”

“I do a lot of things behind the scenes that people don’t know [about], and they only see [what happens] on ’106 and Park,’ ” 2 Chainz continued. “So that would’ve been another event where they wouldn’t have known Kanye was back there, I wouldn’t have name-dropped, that would’ve been part of my process of just working hard and grinding it out.”

Although ‘Ye’s appearance was clearly not planned, it seems like everything worked out for the best. “When he came out, it spilled the beans out the bag, but it was cool,” Chainz says. “It was good for hip-hop that he came out and showed support. He wasn’t trying to take the shine, but he’s just a megastar, anywhere he goes it’s gonna happen.”

When he joined Sway on “RapFix Live,” 2 Chainz, formerly known as Tity Boi, explained the dynamic of his relationship with ‘Ye. “For the most part, when we started building our relationship, we found out we had more things in common than different from a musical standpoint,” he said. “It’s no secret that I came from the hustle background, from that trap, and it’s no secret that he’s maybe more of a hipster swag, backpack kinda guy. So I think it’ll be interesting when you just drop that in the pot, in the blender, and see the outcome and results of some of that.”

2 Chainz’s upcoming album Based on a T.R.U. Story is set for an August 14 release, with the first official single slated to drop on May 1.

Watch: ‘Looper’ Director’s Exclusive Trailer Commentary

‘Joe had a lot of fun working with Bruce on the action scenes,’ Rian Johnson tells MTV News of Joseph Gordon-Levitt playing a young Bruce Willis.

Shock Over ‘Hunger Games’ Directorgate: New Captain Needed Fast!

Which Hollywood heavy-hitter will step in to take helm of ‘Catching Fire’?
By Jason Kaufman

The big “Hunger Games” news this week wasn’t how much cash continued to pour in, but the director who was on his way out. Gary Ross released a statement saying he would not be back for the sequel.

“Despite recent speculation in the media, and after difficult but sincere consideration, I have decided not to direct ‘Catching Fire,’ ” Ross said. “As a writer and a director, I simply don’t have the time I need to write and prep the movie I would have wanted to make because of the fixed and tight production schedule. I loved making ‘The Hunger Games’ — it was the happiest experience of my professional life.”

“Hunger Games” studio Lionsgate expressed remorse at Ross’ departure. “We’re very sorry that Gary Ross has chosen not to direct ‘Catching Fire.’ We were really looking forward to making the movie with him. He did an incredible job on the first film and we are grateful for his work.”

MTV Movies Managing Editor Eric Ditzian thought something was up. “I am frankly surprised he’s not coming back, but in retrospect, I could see the implication when he was speaking to us, he was very reluctant to talk about ‘Catching Fire,’ ” Ditzian told the panel on the latest edition of MTV News’ “Talk Nerdy.”

“Nerdy” host Josh Wigler expressed the need for urgency on the part of Lionsgate to make their hire soon. “Whoever they get to direct ‘Fire’ needs to have started yesterday. They really need to make this hire pretty fast; production is moving in August.”

Who will step in for Ross? On Ditzian’s wish list: Darren Aronofsky. “Great with the hand-held camera, great with these intimate first-person narratives. But it’s not going to happen. He’s busy.”

Ditzian’s pick for the auteur to drive Katniss’ next chapter is Oscar-winning Danny Boyle, who’s no stranger to hand-held cameras himself and has proved time and time again, from “Trainspotting” to “127 Hours,” that he’s a master of first-person tales as well.

The MTV Movies staff also predicts the short list of directors will include Steven Soderbergh, John Hillcoat and J.J. Abrams.

Best Picks for the “Catching Fire” Director Job

“The movie can survive,” Ditzian said.

Dianna Agron Drops By ?Jimmy Kimmel Live?

Ending her day with a promotional appearance, Dianna Agron was spotted at ? Jimmy Kimmel Live!? in Hollywood last night (April 12).

The ?Glee? gal looked beautiful as she greeted fans outside the studio before heading inside and doing her interview.

During the course of her conversation with Kimmel, Dianna noted that her childhood wasn?t normal like most people would expect.

?I lived in a hotel for ten years of my life… It?s really great in theory and then really complicated in theory. Because, when I was in middle school there were friends who would come over… they would steal the housekeeping carts and throw things in the atrium. Then they?d get caught and they?d say, ?Well, I?m friends with Diana.??

?My mom was really adamant about, ?You will do your chores.? We got one privilege- clean towels. We got clean towels.?

‘Avengers’ Exclusive Clip: Tony Stark Confronts Loki

Robert Downey Jr.’s character warns the villain: ‘You’ve managed to piss off every single one of us.’

For a guy going up against Iron Man, Captain America, Thor and the Hulk, you wouldn’t think Loki would be so cavalier.

In our exclusive clip from the highly anticipated “The Avengers,” Robert Downey Jr., as Tony Stark, breaks down the teams for Loki (Tom Hiddleston), and the good guys have quite the lineup.

“Your brother, the demigod. A super soldier, a living legend who kind of lives up to the legend. A man with breathtaking anger-management issues. A couple of master assassins. And you, big fella, you’ve managed to piss off every single one of us,” Tony Stark says.

Audiences will finally be able to see which side prevails when the long-awaited “Avengers” finally hits theaters in a few weeks, on May 4. The fight has been years in the making, with the lead-up spread over five films thus far, from the first “Iron Man” to “Captain America: The First Avenger.”

We know from the trailers and the clip that the fight between Loki and the Avengers will be a little more even when the time comes, but the identity of the alien “army” remains a mystery. Tom Hiddleston stopped by MTV News last year to talk about his work on “The Avengers,” and he hinted that when the secret is revealed, it will definitely please fans.

“Loki has help, obviously, because if Thor could beat Loki on his own at the end of ‘Thor,’ surely why, logically, does it take eight of them to beat him this time?” Hiddleston revealed.

“Also, there is an evolution to Loki as well,” he explained. “He’s more self-possessed; he’s more menacing. If the Loki in ‘Thor’ was about a spiritual confusion — ‘Who am I? How do I belong in this world?’ — the Loki in ‘Avengers’ is ‘I know exactly who I am, and I’m going to make this world belong to me.’ ”

‘Hunger Games’ Star Josh Hutcherson Calls Director Gary Ross ‘My Guy’

‘I think he’s a genius,’ Hutcherson told MTV News hours before Ross departed franchise.

Before it was confirmed that rumors were at a fever pitch, Hutcherson didn’t want to imagine the second film without Ross there to direct it. “I have talked to him. I think Gary’s my guy,” Hutcherson told MTV News at the “Detention” junket.

With Ross’ fate now decided, the young actor only had high praise for the man who directed the blockbuster first film in the series, “The Hunger Games.” “I think he’s a genius. He’s an incredible writer and director, so I’m excited to see kind of what he ends up coming up with for the second one,” he said, adding that he had no other names he wanted to toss in the directorial ring if and when Ross shouldn’t return.

“No, I won’t let myself [say] someone else,” he added. “Not until they tell me it has to be someone else. Gary’s my guy 100 percent.” Well, now might be the time for Hutcherson to start brainstorming new directors he might want to work with once production kicks off.

In a statement released late Monday when the news broke, Ross addressed the speculation and commended the film’s studio, Lionsgate, for giving him the freedom to make the film he wanted to. “Despite recent speculation in the media, and after difficult but sincere consideration, I have decided not to direct ‘Catching Fire,’ ” Ross said in his statement. “As a writer and a director, I simply don’t have the time I need to write and prep the movie I would have wanted to make because of the fixed and tight production schedule.

“I loved making ‘The Hunger Games’ — it was the happiest experience of my professional life,” the statement continued.

“Lionsgate was supportive of me in a manner that few directors ever experience in a franchise: They empowered me to make the film I wanted to make and backed the movie in a way that requires no explanation beyond the remarkable results. And contrary to what has been reported, negotiations with Lionsgate have not been problematic. They have also been very understanding of me through this difficult decision.

“I also cannot say enough about the people I worked with: Producer Nina Jacobson, a great collaborator and a true friend; the brilliant Suzanne Collins, who entrusted us with her most amazing and important story; the gifted and remarkable Jennifer Lawrence, whose performance exceeded my wildest expectations, and the rest of the incredible cast, whom I am proud to call my friends,” he continued. “To the fans I want to say thank you for your support your faith, your enthusiasm and your trust. Hard as this may be to understand, I am trying to keep that trust with you. Thank you all. It’s been a wonderful experience.”

Emma Watson’s Skin-Baring “Bling Ring” Workday

April 13th, 2012 by factor
Respond

Ditching her good girl image for the sake of her latest role, a scantily clad Emma Watson was hard at work on the set of “The Bling Ring” in Venice, CA on Thursday (April 12).

The “Harry Potter” actress – who turns 22-years-old this Sunday, April 15th – was looking quite grown up while decked out in short shorts with a biker jacket and a bikini top underneath.

During the course of getting her hair and makeup touched up, Emma bent over to show off a temporary tattoo placed on her lower back.

As for Miss Watson’s movie, “The Bling Ring” is inspired by actual events in which a group of fame-obsessed teenagers used the Internet to track celebrities’ whereabouts in order to rob the homes of stars including Paris Hilton, Orlando Bloom, Ashley Tisdale, Megan Fox and Lindsay Lohan.

The film is set to hit theaters in 2013 while directed by Sofia Coppola and also starring Kirsten Dunst.

An Open Letter To Axl Rose And Guns N’ Roses Fans Everywhere

April 13th, 2012 by factor
Respond

Our columnist comes out in support of the last remaining rock star after Axl’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame kiss-off.
By James Montgomery

Axl Rose

To: W. Axl Rose, Guns N’ Roses Fans and Whom It May Concern,

Greetings from New York City, which is approximately 490 miles from Cleveland, site of this weekend’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony and roughly 50 bazillion miles from whatever Bedouin caravan Mr. Rose is currently encamped with — though, to be honest, it feels much farther removed from both. Especially given the reaction most GN’R fans have had to Rose’s open letter to the Hall of Fame, which he published Wednesday and which has subsequently turned him into the most hated man on the Internet.

Here’s the thing (and, really, the reason I’m writing this letter): Despite the thousands of comments his letter has generated — which largely run the gamut from “YOU SUCK” to “Axl Rose is a freaking whiny-ass bitch” — I’m happy to be in the minority of people who seemingly have no problem with it whatsoever. In fact, I think it’s pretty awesome.

Another boy-band explosion? James Montgomery takes a closer look at One Direction and the Wanted and what their popularity means for music.

Because I support Axl Rose. And yes, I am aware that, in the past, I have called him “the creepy old guy with the Raiders jersey who lives on top of the hill” and compared him to Lil Wayne. And sure, I realize his recent, uh, output might not be on par with Guns’ previous efforts (anyone can have a bad 20 years). But after reading his letter, none of those things matter. Or, if anything, they actually made it better for me. Because Axl Rose is a rock star. Maybe the last one standing. He is an anachronism and an enigma. There will never be another like him, and really, his missive to the Rock Hall is just further proof of all those points.

To wit: There are a lot of words in Rose’s letter (more than 1,000 of them), none of which are “apology.” This is because Axl never apologizes. Because he doesn’t have to, and he doesn’t care if that offends you. He also never allows himself to be backed into a corner — and everything from his unrelenting blood feud with Slash to the 15-year wait for Chinese Democracy is basically proof of this — and he intimates at several points in his letter that everyone from the HOF committee to his former bandmates was basically attempting to do just that. So rather than be intimidated, Rose just decided to walk away from the whole thing. As he writes, “No one’s taking the ball and going home. … From my perspective … the ball’s never been in our court.”

It’s easy to call Rose a jerk for doing this, but, really, he is a jerk. It’s what makes him who he is and why he’s still able to sell out arenas around the world. We’ve come to expect nothing less, and yet we’re willing to vilify him for acting the way he always has.

Katy Perry, beneath the crown: James Montgomery takes us inside his interview with the pop princess to see what she’s really like off-camera.

In some bizarre way, by skipping the induction (and asking his name not be mentioned in absentia), Rose displays a supreme level of actual integrity. Unlike, say, Ozzy Osbourne, who previously asked that his band Black Sabbath no longer be considered for the Hall only to show up at the 2006 induction and call it an “achievement,” Axl won’t come crawling back. And unlike fellow 2006 inductees Blondie, he spared anyone the ugly onstage feud that surely would’ve erupted by simply saying, “No thanks.” He does what he wants and only what he wants. And the same goes for that much-discussed GN’R reunion, which he shuts down in the letter because, really, it’s “time to move on.”

And that last quote should be taken to heart by all the Guns fans out there raging against Rose today. Because, really, it is time to move on. Move on from your misguided beliefs that Rose is ever going to change or suddenly have a moment of clarity. It’s been, like, 20 years now, and he’s never wavered from his original point: No reunion, not ever. Guns N’ Roses are still a band and they still tour, and if you don’t like it, then don’t come out to the shows. Even though you probably still will.

So, sure, be angry with Axl today. Make claims of never listening to his music again (which would suppose he’s ever going to make music again) and accuse him of putting himself before his fans. But don’t take him to task for being the same person he’s been for 25 years now, because, really, you wouldn’t want him to change. Not for a reunion tour, not for an induction ceremony, not for anything. He will continue to blaze his own path whether you follow him or not. And I applaud him for doing so. He is Axl Rose, after all. He is rock and roll in an era where that phrase has increasingly less clout. We want him on that wall. We need him on that wall. It’s about the only way we can sleep at night, knowing somewhere, Axl is watching over us all. And writing open letters to let us know he still cares.

Sincerely,
James Montgomery
